“Grumpy wizards make toxic brew for the evil Queen and Jack.”
Although this line could easily occur in a fantasy story, assuming one devised a fantasy story and named one of the characters rather unimaginatively “Jack*,” you might guess that I’m researching fonts for this blog. I just installed a font plugin and was canvasing fonts that speak to my style. To my great delight, the default sentence involved grumpy wizards rather than quick brown foxes.
Since I’ve written plenty of words over the years about wizards, who occasionally express grumpiness, and not a single story involving foxes, studying fonts while repeatedly reading a line about magic put me in the right frame of mind to make style choices appropriate to my interests.
And yes, you’ve guessed it – magic, swords, castles, and the odd spaceship – they all appeal to me, mainly because they speak of events that I’ll never experience outside of my imagination. Although I love to read, and will read, almost any genre, my favorite books offer escape from real life – I prefer stories of events that could not conceivably happen to me.
While I return to the mundane world of website development, at least I can daydream about wizards in a high tower mixing smoking potions in their quest to blow up the evil Queen, and, er, Jack.
*In defense of the fictitious author devising the fictitious story about wizards plotting treachery against villainous monarchs, I suppose Jack might properly reference the court jester and not some mere climber of beanstalks.
I agree and I’m sure Wizards are obviously aware they have a huge and diverse international community. To my knowledge this is the first time they have reached out to bloggers and writers in this way. I hope that they will expand their community in the near future.
